Privacy Policy

Ichie ("the app") and this website, getichie.com, are run by Christian Häringer, Dusekestraße 43, 13187 Berlin, Germany ("we," "us," "the developer"). Christian Häringer is the controller for the processing of personal data described in this policy. This policy explains what happens to your information when you visit this website or use Ichie, as required by the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
This website
This website is hosted on Cloudflare Workers, run by Cloudflare, Inc., 101 Townsend St, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA. When you open a page, your browser connects to Cloudflare's network, which delivers the page and protects the site against attacks and abuse. For this, Cloudflare processes the technical data your browser sends with every request: your IP address, the date and time, the page or file requested, and your browser's user agent and referrer.
Cloudflare processes this data on our behalf under a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR). The legal basis is our legitimate interest in delivering the website securely and reliably (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, and its data processing agreement also includes the EU Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers to the United States. More in Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
We don't use cookies, analytics, advertising or tracking on this website. Fonts and images are served from our own site, not loaded from third parties. Links to other sites, such as Bluesky or the App Store, are only followed when you click them; those sites then have their own privacy policies.
Contact by email
If you write to hello@getichie.com, we process your email address, your message and anything else you include, only to answer you. Incoming mail is received by Cloudflare Email Routing (Cloudflare, Inc., under the same data processing agreement and transfer safeguards as above), which forwards it to our inbox without storing the message. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering your request (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR), or taking steps towards or fulfilling a contract where your message is about one (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR). We delete your messages once your request is settled, unless we are legally required to keep them longer.
The app: what Ichie does with your data
Ichie runs on your Mac or iPhone. Picking Live Photos, adding music, trimming, adding date, time and location to your clips, previewing, and exporting your film all happen locally on your device. Ichie does not upload your photos, videos, music, or exported films to us or anyone else, and we never have access to any of it.
The app doesn't send personal data to us. Ichie has no accounts, analytics, advertising, crash reporting or telemetry. We don't use your data for tracking, profiling or automated decisions.
The one exception: place names
Ichie can show where each clip was taken. By default it shows the clip's GPS coordinates, which stay on your device. If you turn on place names (part of Ichie Pro), Ichie sends each clip's GPS coordinate to Apple's geocoding service, which returns a readable place name, such as the town.
- What is sent: one GPS coordinate per clip. A precise coordinate can be personal data, because it can show where you were. Ichie never sends the photo, video, music or your film.
- To whom: Apple, only to look up the place name.
- When: only while place names are turned on and your device is online. With coordinates, or offline, nothing is sent.
- Optional: you don't have to provide this. Ichie works fully without place names.
We don't receive the request or its result; both go directly between your device and Apple. The app tells you about this next to the place-names setting before you turn it on.
Legal basis
Sending a coordinate to Apple for place names is based on your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you give by turning on place names. You can withdraw your consent at any time by switching back to coordinates or turning off the overlay. Withdrawing doesn't affect the lawfulness of lookups made before.
Recipient and transfers outside the EU
Within the app, the only recipient is Apple. According to Apple's Privacy Policy, personal data of people in the European Economic Area is controlled by Apple Distribution International Limited in Ireland, and Apple transfers it to other countries, including the United States, under the EU Standard Contractual Clauses. Apple processes the request under its own privacy policy. For this website and email, the only recipient is Cloudflare, as described above. We don't share, sell or disclose personal data to anyone else.
Storage period
We don't store photos, videos, music, films, GPS coordinates or place-name lookups on our own servers, so there is nothing for us to delete. Apple's own retention rules apply to lookups it receives. Ichie doesn't save looked-up place names anywhere, except in the film you export. Cloudflare keeps the technical data from website visits only as long as needed to deliver and protect the site, under its own retention rules; we don't keep website logs of our own. Emails you send us are kept only as long as described under "Contact by email".
Permissions Ichie requests
- Photos library access, to read the date, time and location stored in your Live Photos. On Mac, Ichie's own picker needs it to show your Live Photos. On iPhone, picking photos works without it; Ichie only asks when you turn on date, time and location.
- Adding to your Photos library (iPhone), to save your finished film when you tap Save to Photos. This permission lets Ichie add new items only, not read your library.
- Files you select yourself, through the standard file picker: on Mac for adding
.movclips or a music file and for saving your film, on iPhone for adding a music file. Ichie has no access to any file you haven't picked. - Network access, used only for the place-name lookup described above.
Purchases
Ichie Pro is an optional in-app purchase, processed by Apple through the App Store. We don't receive your payment details, your Apple Account details or your billing information. Ichie checks on your device whether you own Ichie Pro, using Apple's StoreKit. Apple processes purchase information under its own privacy policy.
Where your settings live
Ichie remembers a few preferences, such as the film length, the format, the date, time and location settings, and whether the "Made with Ichie" credit is shown. They are stored in Apple's standard preferences storage on your Mac or iPhone, stay on your device, and are never sent to us.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access, rectify or erase your personal data, to restrict or object to its processing, and to data portability. Where processing is based on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of processing before the withdrawal. You can also object to processing based on our legitimate interest (Art. 21 GDPR). To use these rights, write to hello@getichie.com. Unless you have emailed us, we hold no personal data about you, and a request will usually confirm exactly that.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority. For us, that is the Berliner Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit (Berlin Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information).
Data protection officer
Ichie is developed by one person, so we are not required to appoint a data protection officer. Contact us directly at hello@getichie.com.
Children
Ichie is not directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal data from children on our own systems.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Ichie changes. The "Last updated" date at the top shows when it last changed.
